Steeps --- Words of the wise from ski school pros

1.   Stance makes a huge difference in feeling in control and comfortable, and in reducing fatigue.

Use your skeleton, not your muscles, to support your body. Relaxing muscles you don’t need conserves energy. A key to being confident in the steeps is learning how to change edges. It’s a paradox: you have to let go of the security of your uphill edges to give your skis the freedom to turn easily on the new set. That requires trust that when your body dives down the hill in the direction of the turn, your feet will follow.
(Cathy Meyer, Perfect North Slopes ski school, Ohio)

2.   Focus on where you swing and touch your pole to ensure you’re always balanced over your skis on steep terrain.

For each turn, image you want to move through a doorway created by the tip of your pole. If your pole touches near the tip of your ski, you will have a very narrow doorway to move through, and you may even trip over the pole when you turn. But if you reach your downhill arm straight down the slope from your binding’s toe-piece and farther away from your ski, you’ll have a big doorway to move through, and the pole won’t get in your way. This will keep you balanced over your downhill ski and will ensure that you don’t get hung up in the back seat.
(Justin Picken, Vail ski & snowboard school, Colorado)

3.   Make sideways smiley faces with your turns.

Concentrate on making rounded, complete turns in the shape of a C, and you’ll always maintain a safe speed.
(Ann Mattack, Alpine Valley ski school, Wisconsin)

4.   Keep looking down the hill.

You’ll not only see where you’re going, but you’ll keep your shoulders and hips pointing in the right direction to make turn transition easier.
(John Kirby, Copper mountain ski & snowboard school, Colorado)

5.   Vision is only one of your five senses, but it is critical for maintaining balance on steep terrain.

You get feedback regarding slope angles and friction from your feet and hands (ski poles) in real time, but only vision provides a preview of coming attractions. So look where you want to go and steer your skis in that direction. And enjoy taking in the amazing vistas that your perch on the mountain generously provides.
(Wynn Miller, Breckenridge ski & snowboard school, Colorado)

附议: 其实滑的好于不好的区别就在于细节
