I think piano is popular because it is easier to learn in the beginning and more common.  First of all you have the keys - so you do not need to find your position on the strings like violin or quitar.  It is easier for the kid to hit a key and out comes the right note.  The sound that comes out has nice harmonics - that is from the structure of the instrument. It has a rich sound - as opposed to some other instrument you really need a lot of technique to produce a nice sound.   Incidentally it is also a nice piece - good looking piece of furniture - you can also put a nice photo on top.  It makes the home look nice i guess.

I played it when I was a kid and kept playing till I went to University and taught beginners as a way to earn pocket money.  However my fingers are too short to be a great pianist. Many nights I would play up to three hours when I was a teenager - try to play in the dark when my parents are out, so I still remember playing (sheer muscle memory) after I stopped for some 30 years before I bought a piano for myself again.  I went to the piano house and just sit down and played the exam piece I played 30 years ago.  And through playing the piano I met up with the whole culture of music ( that is in the old days, you do not need that now).  My whole life is enriched by music - whether it is classical or world music becuase playing piano led you to know and leanr about music theory etc. and the pieces that you played - many famous pieces I hear in the operas and concers.  And if you learn to play by ear you can reproduce the tune on the piano the music peices your enjoy.  That adds to your enjoyment in life.

I think the most important thing is that your kid should like to do it.  Do not force them.  My sister was "forced" to learn becuase by that time we have a piano at home and my mom sent her as a matter of fact to the same piano teacher I had.  One day I saw her sitting downstairs with her piano book - she just did not want to go the lessons.  She left home just to "fake" she went to the teacher's house for lessons.  However later when she grew up she played and sang in school "The House of the Rising Sun" and won the first prize.  So you never know.

看来人最爱的还是自由。自由地选择，自由地热爱，自由地自暴自弃。 被剥夺了自由，再美好的东西也瞬间会失去吸引力。真正爱孩子的父母的需要懂得在给孩子自由的前提下加以引导。完全靠强迫往往行不通，更不是成就天才的方法。

严重同意作者观点。不要逼小孩学钢琴，如果小孩真的喜欢，那当然好。小孩欢乐成长最为重要。

我小孩不喜欢钢琴，我也没有买钢琴。后来他却喜欢吉它，虽然因为没有经验换了好几个吉它，仍然比钢琴便宜多了。所以我有闲钱买滑雪板。

电子琴只要轻轻用力就出声，很难让孩子体会击键的力度，钢琴用力要大一些，而且轻重区别很大。但电子琴很容易上手，孩子觉得更有趣。

C老师当时接受闹闹的一个原因也是他不算初学，即使用的是电子琴，五线谱等基础知识，他已经过关了。

闹闹转钢琴时，老师使劲让练高抬指，很痛苦，当时我们有些后悔学电子琴。现在想来，这种初学的痛苦都是一样的，即使一开始就弹钢琴。

电子琴那一阵，闹闹至少挺喜欢，如果一开始就跟着C老师弹钢琴，估计不用半年就彻底放弃了。这样的例子很多。

想起一件事， 瓜瓜， 闹妈， 你们的孩子在家讲法语吗？他们的英语是不是相当于我们这里孩子的法语？还有， 你们的法语都很好吧？不然咋买菜啊。
