Dynamic Medium Radius Turns (MR)
What: Modern High-Performance, linked medium radius turns demonstrating strong ski performance (carving) with high edge angles and masterful pressure control with both skis employing similar edge angles.
Why: To develop the ability to create smooth and seamless release and engagement through turn transitions, without abrupt un-weighting or forceful “up” to initiate turns. To effectively and efficiently utilize and manage edge/pressure movements throughout the turn. To continually utilize balancing and directional movements to maintain fore/aft and lateral balance over a constantly moving Base of
Support (no park-n-ride).
How: Use flexion and extension movements that originate in the ankle (moving through both boot cuffs) and are
supported by the knees, hips, and spine. Use tipping movements that originate in feet and ankles (equal edge angles, parallel leg shafts). Inclination of the lower body is used to adjust edge angle. Angulation is used to direct balance toward the outside ski. During turn transition, the lower body releases and realigns with the upper body. Legs tip/turn under a stable upper body.
Turn shape is controlled by adjusting edge angle and making adjustments in pressure, not by active rotary movements or twisting of the skis.
Manage and direct pressure with a goal of engaging the skis (outside ski) as early in the turn as possible (the “upside-down” effect). Show the ski bases up the hill early in the turn. Release the Center or Mass into the new direction of travel.
