Canada Dominates the Podium at the 2013 Pan American Badminton Championships

OTTAWA, ON (October 28, 2013) - With Gold medals in the Team Championships earlier in the week and the Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles in the individual finals on Sunday, Canada dominated both the court and the podium at the 2013 Pan American Badminton Championships in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. It is extremely encouraging results for a young national team that has its sights squarely set on the 2015 Pan American Games being hosted on home soil in Toronto in less than 24 months.

“I couldn't be more pleased with the play of every member of our team - their commitment and focus propelled us to some outstanding results in the Dominican Republic,” said National Team Coach, Jeff WHITE (Calgary, AB). “This will be a huge confidence boost as our team looks toward upcoming major championships including the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next summer and the PanAm Games in Toronto in 2015.”

In the Team Event earlier in the week, Canada beat Mexico (4-1), Jamaica (3-2), Brazil (3-1) and, in a repeat of last year’s Team final, the Canadians defeated the top-seeded Americans (3-1) to defend their Pan Am Team title. Members of the winning Canadian side are:

“Throughout the team competition, we all stuck together and really rallied behind each other to put a streak together in our preliminary matches and in the Finals against the US,” said Phyllis Chan who joined forces with her Women’s Doubles partner Alexandra Bruce to seal the PanAm Championship against the American. “Canada has always been a top country in the Pan American zone so it's always a thrill to prove it with another Gold medal win.”

The excellent results continued in the individual events with Canadians taking top spot in 3 of the 5 category finals - Michelle Li in Women’s Singles, Adrian Liu - Derrick Ng in the Men’s Doubles and Toby Ng - Alexandra Bruce in Mixed Doubles.

“Toby and I had to stay really focused and sharp as the Americans were a very strong team and challenged our new partnership,” said Alexandra Bruce after her Mixed Doubles win with partner Toby Ng. “It is always an honour to be a part of Team Canada and to have the week that our team had here in Santo Domingo, just fuels the hunger to train harder to compete at the highest level in the upcoming international season, including the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next summer.”
