Please join me and the entire Western community in congratulating Western alumna and Canadian literary icon, Alice Munro, on winning the 2013 Nobel Prize in Literature. Counted among the world’s greatest short story writers, she is beloved by readers around the globe for her moving portraits of women in small-town settings.

Munro's writing career was fostered at Western. As an undergraduate student pursuing an English degree, she published three short stories in Western’s undergraduate English magazine, Folio, from 1949-51. She returned to Western in 1974-75 as a writer-in-residence. During that time, she was working on her collection, Who Do You Think You Are?, which won the Governor General’s Award.

In 1976, she was bestowed with an honorary degree from Western, the only such degree she has ever accepted.

Western's students, faculty, staff and alumni are extremely proud that she counts the University as part of her literary family and we are honoured to call her one of our own.
