This song was quite a hit indeed when it came out in the early 70's.  The lyrics is like a summary of American culture, singing about  1959 when he was a paper boy and delivering paper when Buddy Holly and two others Rock and Roll guys died in a plane crash. The lyrics are legendary as you hear it it reminds you of your youth ( if you are around in the 50's and 60's) James Dean, Lennon, Rolling stone, the King ( Elvis) all addressed in name in his song and the stories behind Helter Skelter ( death of Sharon Tate murdered with others in Beverley Hills home by Charles Manson with other , Sharon was wife of Polinsky) and Chubby Checker's song's lyrics - Jack be nimble Jack be quick ( one of his greatest hits, he was the guy started the Twist) were all there.  It is a great song to listen to not just because of the music but its empathetic power that reminds you of the news and life of the time.  It hits the chord with many people - particularly in a concert setting.  Thanks for sharing the two versions side by side.  It does bring memories.

I never understood in the old days the significance about the "I drove the Chevy through the levy but the levee was dry" until I heard about Katrina hitting New Orleans and the levee was broke!  Then I realize, not having lived in New Orleans that it must be a thrill by young people to drive the car on the levee when there was a storm and the water was splashing onto the levee! Without having lived there I do not even know what a levee was!

BTW if you are interested in the Super Tramp,  Roger Hodgeson is coming to Casino Rama on Nov 16 17 weekend, two nights and he is really good and you will like his songs - his lyrics are great!  Up there with Don Maclean, in my opinion.

5-60年代的老歌, 到了2011年还有许多年轻人很熟练跟唱的歌, 肯定是不朽的。。。。。。。。。。。。。。
